Safety Tips for Your Construction Site

The construction industry is among the most dangerous, with the highest rate of fatal injuries. Safety should be the highest priority on construction sites to protect both your employees and the integrity of the project. The most common sources of risk involve falls and struck by objects, operating heavy machinery and the use of chemicals. We’ve compiled a few safety tips to help reduce some of the involved risk.

Falls and Struck by objects
To reduce the risk of workers falling, keep walkways and stairs free of debris, always make use of handrails and traction tape on stairs and inspect ladders to ensure their structural integrity. Additionally, workers should wear hard hats in any areas where the risk of falling objects is present. If scaffolding is being used, ensure that platforms are tightly planked and make use of safety harnesses when possible.

Heavy Machinery Operations
Any worker using heavy machinery should be trained thoroughly in operations and safety. Additionally, this equipment should be regularly inspected and well maintained. Ensure that forklifts are not traveling while elevated and the outriggers of cranes must be extended before operation. Any machine that lifts heavy items should not be used over the heads of workers or near electrical lines.

Chemical use
Many chemicals are hazardous and will require the use of personal protective equipment. Employees must be trained in hazard communications and personal protective equipment. Employers should keep safety data sheets (SDS) for each chemical you use on site, and ensure that workers know how to read and interpret this information. Chemical spill cleanup kits should be kept nearby as well.
