What Happens if You’re Required to Have SR-22 Insurance?

After you have been ordered by the court to get an SR-22, it is not the end of your driving career. Whether you receive the court order as a result driving under the influence (DUI), driving recklessly or getting into an accident while you didn’t have auto insurance, you can still get coverage by following the requirements outlined in the court order or the forms sent to you by your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Step 1. Get Auto Insurance
In order to be able to drive again, you will need to have the appropriate type of insurance on your vehicle. If you want complete protection for your car, consider the following options: Car crash with ambulance

  • Liability coverage

  • Collision coverage

  • Comprehensive coverage

Oftentimes, people get the minimum insurance coverage only to find that they are not adequately protected if they are in an accident. If you want full coverage for your vehicle, consider purchasing all three coverage options so that you will be covered for multiple types of accidents.

Step 2. File for an SR-22 Certificate
During the process of getting your insurance, you will also need to file for an SR-22 certificate (which usually comes with a small fee). Until you contact your insurance provider, your driver’s license may be suspended as a source of motivation.

Step 3. Wait for Your Insurance Provider to Notify the DMV
After you’ve taken the first two steps, your insurer will provide the documentation to the DMV so that they know you have the appropriate car insurance, which enables you to drive around legally. If you let your coverage lapse, your insurer is required to inform the DMV and your license could be suspended or revoked.

Step 4. Maintain Your Car Insurance
The final step to restoring your ability to drive is to ensure you make your insurance payments on time. If your insurance is canceled, then your SR-22 certificate is void. Instead of risking your ability to drive, consider setting up automatic payments for your insurance premiums to secure your auto insurance.

We’ve got you covered.
